In June 2020. we were approached by a customer who was looking to completely renovate their garden, whilst spending more time at home as a result of the UK being in lockdown.
They had no previous experience with SIPs panels, other than watching a few YouTube videos to find out a bit more information about them, so as always, we were happy to help talk them through the whole process and answer any questions they may have.
Initially, we began by discussing all the ideas they had in mind, in terms of footprint sizes, how many openings they would like, what size and what position they would like these openings, as well as base types, etc.
After multiple amendments to their 3D design, and once they had received their quotation, the customer was now in a position to place their order with SimplySIPs.
At the time the order was placed, we were extremely busy with an influx of orders due to lockdown and people working from home wanting offices, however we managed to get this studio engineered, manufactured and delivered ahead of schedule.
It was then time for the build to commence!
This SIPs Kit included the following:
> All SIP Panels cut and ready to construct – This design consisted of 2.44m x 1.22m x 97mm SIP Panels for the Floor and 2.44m x 1.22m x 122mm SIP Panels for the Walls and Roof.
> All associated jointing splines and timbers – Jointing Splines for 97mm SIPs (2.44m Long) and Jointing Splines for 122mm SIPs (2.34m Long).
> Both opening reveals cut, and timber lined, ready to install the doors and windows.
Beginning with the concrete slab foundation, this is the same footprint size as the studio and a minimum of 50mm above and below ground level. The SIPs floor then comes fitted with a membrane and battens, which lifts the SIPs floor off the concrete slab, allowing for airflow.
Once the SIPs floor is in place, the next step is to cover the floor in OSB overboard before laying down the soleplate. Details of where to position the soleplate are shown in the instruction pack supplied on delivery.
Using the following tools, the customer was then able to complete the build to shell finish, before adding the breathable membrane wrap and battens:
Electric screwdriver, cordless drill, level, hammer, tape measure, paint roller and tray, stanley knife, work bench, electric plane and a lorry strap.
The build was then complete with the customers choice of cladding (we do not supply this) – They chose to us cedral lap weatherboard cladding on the rear of the build and western red cedar on the rest of the building. Externally, the studio was then finished off by fitting the EPDM rubber roof membrane.
Moving onto the internal finishes; a vapour membrane is fitted to the walls with battens – This is where electrics can be hidden before finishing with plasterboard and decorating however they wish.
This customer planned to divide their studio into two seperate rooms, so we suggested that it would be much more cost effective to fit a simple stud wall after constructing the SIPs kit, as opposed to using SIP Panels for the internal wall.
The studio is finally complete, creating a versatile space either for working from home or to use as as an additional living space. The garden looked spectacular after the whole garden renovation was complete!
