Well-Being Show Room, Oxford

Case Study Description

In April 2022, we had a customer approach us, who after years of looking for a suitable space within their home to use for fitness, well-being and work, decided to start up their own Garden Room Company.

They had a few ideas in mind of what they were wanting to achieve for their own studio, with plans to use this as a ‘show building’, and of course, we were more than happy to help and offer our friendly advice throughout the process.

We began by looking at two different designs they had in mind, and as always, we explained how we recommend opting for footprint sizes that are compatible with the SIP panels to reduce extra cuts and wastage. Bearing in mind, they must allow a minimum of 500mm around the studio footprint to construct, wrap, batten and clad.

Once they were happy with our suggested footprint sizes, we could get to work producing their bespoke 3D designs on SketchUp.

After some back and forth, the customer was finally happy with their 3D design, so we sent across our quotation containing the SIPs Kit price, along with prices for the following optional extras we can supply: Panel Thickness Upgrade, Extra Opening Reveals (1st opening is included in the kit price), Fixing Kit (Screws, adhesive, etc), Delivery, External Breathable Membrane Wrap and Battens, On Site Construction, and EPDM Roof Kit.

Due to the positioning of this studio and it being located in the front garden, this project did require planning permission. After waiting approximately 6 weeks for a decision from the local authority, the studio was approved, meaning the customer was ready to place an order with SimplySIPs and the build could commence!

In order to mark the design ready for engineering, we always confirm the following:

> The customer is completely happy with their 3D design.

> All window and door openings are the correct sizes (Bearing in mind we always add 10mm to allow for fitting).

> What garden room foundation is being used.

In this case, the customer chose to use ground screws as their base type, so we created them a pin detail showing the amounts and locations of ground screws required for their footprint size.

When the SIP kit has been engineered, manufactured and delivered, it is finally time to start the build!

This SIPs Kit includes the following:

> All SIP panels cut and ready to construct – This design consisted of 2.44m x 610mm x 97mm Floor/Roof SIP Panels for the Floor, 2.44m x 1.22m x 122mm SIP Panels for the Walls and 2.44m x 610mm x 122mm Roof SIP Panels for the Roof.

> All associated jointing splines and timbers – Jointing Splines for 97mm SIPs (2.44m Long) and Jointing Splines for 122mm SIPs (2.34m Long)

> As ground screws were being used as the base, we supplied a timber subframe as part of the kit, which the SIPs floor then sits inside the frame.

> All three opening reveals cut, and timber lined, ready to install the doors and windows.

> Full assembly instructions to construct the studio to shell finish.

It was then down to the customer to source their own doors, windows, cladding and internal finishes (we do not supply these) to complete the build.

Overall, we absolutely love this studio! It is a bright, versatile space that can be used all year round, and we wish our customer all the best in their future supplying and installing garden studios.
