External Finishes

Garden Studio External Cladding

External Finishes

Depending on your choice of external finishes, this can have a major impact on the overall appearance of your garden studio.

Until you have completely finished the exterior of your garden building, you will need to keep it protected using a plastic sheet to prevent the SIPs panels from getting wet. (Should you choose to order our fixing kit, this temporary cover would be included)

The steps to finishing the exterior of your garden room are as follows:

Once you have built your SIPs kit to shell finish, you will need to fit a breathable membrane on the outside of the SIPs panels.

This will not only prevent any moisture from getting inside your garden studio, but it also allows moisture generated inside the room to escape.

We can supply this breathable membrane as one of the optional extras for our SIPs kits.

External Breatherable Membrane

When the SIPs Kit has been fully wrapped in the breather membrane, it is then time to fit your cladding battens.

These will need to be fitted 90 degrees to the direction that you want your cladding, with battening centres usually around 600mm.

Cladding battens are crucial to the longevity of your garden studio, as they will allow for airflow and moisture drainage between your cladding and the SIPs panels. In the long term, this will prevent any risk of rotting or damp and prolong the life of your chosen cladding.

We can supply 25mm x 50mm cladding battens as one of our optional extras for our SIPs Kits – These are included with the external breathable membrane.

Please note, some types of cladding requires cross battens, and the battens we supply are for single direction only.

Once your external membrane and battens have been fitted, it’s then onto the fun part… cladding!

There is a large choice of cladding options available when it comes to garden rooms. however which option you choose often comes down to budget and what kind of aesthetic you’re looking to achieve.

We find the 2 most popular cladding choices used on our SIPs studios are: Composite cladding and wood cladding.

Unfortunately we do not supply cladding, however we do have lots of customer photos to use as inspiration!

After fitting your cladding, the last step to finishing off the exterior of your new garden studio is fitting the EPDM roof membrane.

It is often a misconception that having side and rear overhangs can make fitting your cladding easier, but in fact these can actually make it more difficult.

Your cladding should run to the top of the roof of your SIPs kit, the EPDM will then go over the edge and your trims added to finish off.

There are some great videos and tutorials online at www.avenirroofing.co.uk or www.rubber4roofs.co.uk.

The EPDM roof membrane we supply as one of our optional extras for our SIPs kits is supply only, meaning it is shipped from our supplier and delivered straight to your door.

Please note, we do not advise putting a green/sedum roof on our SIPs kits due to their heavy weight when wet. If you are trying to achieve this look, we would recommend fitting astroturf or artificial grass.

Our customers complete their garden rooms themselves, meaning we don’t often get to see the finished results of our garden rooms. If you have ever had a SIPs kit from us, please do feel free to send us some photo’s or tag us on our socials!
