Panel Thickness Upgrade
When supplying our custom-made SIPs Kits, we offer the option to upgrade your wall and roof panels to our 122mm thickness panels.
This is a popular choice for the majority of our customers and there are many benefits of doing so.
What SIP Panel Thicknesses We Supply
All sizes of our SIPs Panels come in either 97mm or 122mm overall thickness. These are made using 2 sheets of 11mm OSB adhered to a sheet of either 75mm or 100mm of insulation.
We do also produce our standard 2.44m x 1.22m SIPs Panels in 147mm thickness, which are made from 2 sheets of 11mm OSB adhered to a sheet of 125mm insulation.
The U Values of our SIPs panels are approximately as follows:
- 97mm SIPs Panels = 0.30 w/m ²k
- 122mm SIPs Panels = 0.22 w/m ²k
- 147mm SIPs Panels = 0.20 w/m ²k
Why We Upgrade The Walls and Roof, But Not The Floor
We only offer the option to upgrade the walls and/or roof panels of our kits, because we always use our 97mm thickness panels for the floor of our SIPs studios.
From an insulation point of view, heat rises so this is why it is better to have the walls and roof upgraded as opposed to the floor.
If you were to use 122mm thickness panels for the floor, this would also eat into the internal height of the studio, as generally we use an overall height of 2.5m for our SIPs studios, as this is standard to be under permitted development.
Advantages of Upgrading to Thicker Panels
If you are planning to use your studio all year round, for example as an office, you will get a better thermal value from the 122mm thickness panels. This will help to keep you nice and warm in the winter months and cooler during the summer months making it more suitable for all-year-round use, especially if you plan on using your studio as an office.
This also helps to reduce the energy required for heating and cooling the studio, making it more energy efficient and cost-effective.

Generally we produce all our SIPs kits in 97mm thickness panels for the floor, walls and roof, however sometimes depending on the size of the studio we will automatically upgrade either just the roof, or both the walls and roof, to the thicker 122mm SIPs Panels. This is simply because the thicker panels allow for thicker timber, therefore there is more structural support.
Although this isn’t something SIPs panels are commonly used or known for, by upgrading to the thicker panels this will slightly improve the acoustic performance of the SIPs studio. This would be beneficial if you are planning on using your studio as a cinema room, however generally if you are planning on using your studio for something louder, such as a music room, and require it to be fully soundproof, we would recommend fitting some sort of acoustic foam panels internally to help soundproof the studio.
